kids _are_ competent!

Watch this! This guy is awesome! I want to do this with my nephews. The same guy wrote “50 dangerous things to do with your children” which I think I’ll have to add to my growing library-of-cool-stuff-to-do-with-the-nephews-(and-future-kids). Here is a family doing the 50 dangerous things one at a time. How fun! Oh, and the [Continue]

model rocketry

Model rocketry stuff: C.L. Stong’s June 1957 column in Scientific Ammerican about the field of amateur rocketry Captain Bertrand R. Brinley’s 1960 book, Rocket Manual for Amateurs looks veryvery cool! Ignite! is a rocket science program for high school kids where they get to build 6ft + tall model rockets and launch them into space. [Continue]

Joshua Brady

Joshua Brady was born last night. He weighed a whopping 10 pounds 2.7 ounces, and is 23.5 inches long! Quite a hoss! Glenda ended up having a c section. Everyone is doing fine, although she’ll be in the hospital till Fridayish. Some pics are here, and more will be added as they are taken: http://gallery.gandalf23.com/v/family/barry/

Heard from Glenda again today. “We’ve narrowed it down to: Tristan Brady Hudson Brady Joshua Caeden” So, which one do y’all like best? [poll=6] (not that this is scientific or binding or anything, just curious)

vintage kid’s books

Vintage Kids’ books my kid loves I remember reading “Too Many Mittens”, although I can’t recall the plot. And “Plenty of Fish” looks kinda cool, may need to track that down for lil’ Barry. I’ve already started a lil’ library for Barry, we’ve got Donut Chef, The Red Lemon, This is not a pumpkin, The [Continue]

growing up in a risk averse society

No Fear: Growing up in a risk averse society “No Fear joins the increasingly vigorous debate about the role and nature of childhood in the UK. Over the past 30 years activities that previous generations of children enjoyed without a second thought have been relabelled as troubling or dangerous, and the adults who permit them [Continue]

gonna have a nephew!

So Glenda had an ultrasound (is that right? sounds kinds sinister or sci-fi-ish) the other day and held off on telling everyone until last night. She’s gonna have a little boy, so I’ll be getting a nephew in a few months. Apparently he’s already pretty active, he’s been kicking a lot and moving around, and [Continue]

at long last

My cousins had the coolest toy gun when I was a kid. It was a copy of an M14 rifle, with detachable magazine, and it shot some sort of plastic dart/bullet. It was the bomb. At some point it became the toy gun that was left at our grandparents house for playing with out there. [Continue]

names

So what should little unnamed yet Baby Dearman be named? It’s an important question. Realizing, of course, that I have just about zero influence, here are some of my thoughts: Mike, Michael, and Michelle are right out: too many in the family. Glen could be good if it’s a boy. Deana or Diana maybe for [Continue]

how children learn

“The only good reason for playing games with babies is because we love them, and delight in playing these games with them and sharing in their delight with them — not because we want someday to get them into college. It is our delight in the baby and the games that makes the game fun, [Continue]

of course!

A-ha! A giant robot castle! Like a transformer that is a robot and a castle! So the shoulders can be castle-ish turrets! I think I saw a Warhammer 40k titan that was like that, or maybe a robot from some anime. Yeah, a very quick google turned this up, not what I was remembering, but [Continue]
